Who:
We are looking for a detail-oriented, enthusiastic volunteer who can:
- Work independently and travel long distances alone in remote areas.
- Safely navigate unimproved roads and use a map (GPS or smartphone preferred to navigate complex ownership).
- Sit still for long periods of time while using a spotting scope.
- Hike through rough terrain.
What:
Observe bison herds with a spotting scope to identify tagged females and record calf data. This work could include:
- Use a spotting scope to read bison ear tags.
- Determine which females with pink ear tags have calves.
- Record and share calf data with American Prairie staff.
A pick-up truck will be provided if necessary.
Where:
Sun Prairie and White Rock units in northeastern Montana.
When:
Work will take place during August and/or September, 2025. Approximately 30-40 hours of work is required, but volunteer shifts can be condensed or spread out over August and September depending on the volunteer’s schedule.
