Learn more about American Prairie

American Prairie is a uniquely Montana place for you to explore and enjoy.

Across the world, less than two percent of temperate grasslands have been permanently conserved. We are on a mission to conserve and rewild one of the last remaining intact short-grass prairie ecosystems left on the planet. This will serve as a refuge for people and wildlife–forever.

American Prairie is comprised of private and public lands spread across Central and Northeastern Montana. The mission of American Prairie is to help conserve the shortgrass prairie ecosystem, provide public access, support local economies, and work in partnership with the local and Indigenous communities.

Visitors can experience this uniquely Montana landscape, observe wildlife in their natural habitats, and explore Indigenous and homestead-era sites that serve as a reminder of the region's important history and cultural significance.
