Judith River Special Management Unit

For the 2026 season, hunting will be managed through both Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Block Management program and through American Prairie.

The PN is enrolled in a Type 2 BMA for the following species: upland game birds, antelope, whitetail deer, turkey and mule deer (for 426-50 permit holders ONLY). Reservations can be made through FWP. Click here to learn more.

Bull Elk Hunting on the PN will be available in the Judith River Special Management Unit. Hunters who hold the 417-21 archery tag and the 426-20 rifle tag will be able to apply for hunting access with the application below.

What?

The Judith River Special Management unit is a little over 5,800 acres of the PN, reserved specifically for recipients of this special draw to pursue a bull elk. The east side of the Judith River will remain in a Wildlife Habitat Protection Area and will be a no trespassing zone for all visitors from August 15 – Dec 1.

Why?

American Prairie actively manages land to provide hunters with quality hunting opportunities. In region 6, we have followed a special draw model in the Larb Hills for the last five years with great feedback from hunters. There have been a lot of changes on the PN for the last few hunting seasons, and after evaluating feedback from hunters and elk populations in the area, we hope to offer quality hunting access to several applicants.

When?

The application for the Judith River Special Management Unit is now LIVE. Each week an applicant will be drawn from the pool and will be contacted with an opportunity to hunt the following Thursday through Sunday. The hunter can then accept or decline the opportunity and will be required to submit a signed waiver before the start of their hunt.
