Who:
We are looking for a communicative, self-motivated volunteer who:
- Is familiar with and comfortable with bird and big-game hunting.
- Is hospitable to the public and will respond accurately to general questions.
- Can work independently and travel long distances alone in remote areas.
- Can safely navigate dangerous roads and use a map (GPS or smartphone preferred to navigate complex ownership).
- Has a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
This volunteer role can be shared by a couple or pair of individuals.
What:
During duty hours the volunteer will be present in the staff housing or driving roads on the property to monitor wildlife and vehicle movement. This work could include:
- Monitor hunter activity and report public hunting and access regulatory infractions to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MT FWP) staff and supervisor.
- Provide monitoring and reporting on wildlife, especially people-wildlife interactions, and road use on the property.
- Positively engage public visitors to provide information and answer questions.
- Monitor buildings and property reporting damage, issues, or unusual activity to Volunteer Manager.
Where:
The 73 unit (near Winnett, Montana) is located along the lower Musselshell River in a remote region of north central Montana.
- Housing is provided for this position (multi-bedroom home, which may occasionally be shared with itinerant American Prairie staff) or the provision for parking a camping trailer.
- The property is accessed via 25 miles of gravel and unimproved road which becomes impassable when wet and requires an AWD or 4WD vehicle.
When:
This position will be on site late August through late November, 2025, with flexible arrival and departure dates. An average of 30 hours per week will be required. The general schedule will be 7am-10am and 3pm-6pm Thursday through Monday, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off.
